Postmodernism

Postmodern films often contain the following characteristics:

  • Challenges genre conventions and could be a mixture of many genres.

Lego movie is: Fantasy, Actin/adventure, comedy, romance, and scoff instead of conforming to one.

  • Challenging typical character roles.
Emmet (the hero) is an average person, wild style (female) is the strongest if the group, an me and a woman and Batman is not as heroic as he is in other films

  • Pastiche: imitates/has similarities with other stories,  films, books and has a humorous take on troubles in society/culture
Links to the Matrix with a similar storyline/plot, brings in characters from other stories (Batman) and gives the message that imagination is important to have in society and you don't have to conform to the rules and be different.

  • Hyperreality: makes the audience aware that they are watching a movie and that it isn't real (e.g. breaking the fourth wall like deadpan)
The lego movie is the lego worlds in animation with our real life world.

  1. Tell me why you think 'The Lego Movie' had elements of postmodernism. For example, why did it challenge genre convetions/imiate other stories? Think about it from an audience perspective.

  2. through including elements of postmodernism the leo movie was able to reach wider, more diverse audience- and show they are moving away from discriminative stereotypes. They also effectively depict a more realistic setting and characters by using lots of genres, as life does not just conform to one specific one.
